the beginning soars on moth eaten wings
the dead groom
a young woman overtaken by love
gives the promise of long years to a boy
just departing for war
she tells him that dead or alive he must return for her
when he finally does return
after seven unvarying years
he is pinned with bright medals
but has long since passed from life
having been slain in some already washed over trench
he embraces her
and without releasing, drags her atop his horse
and they ride off together toward their shared afterlife
they pass through nine country churches
and at each of these the young corpse must pause and make payment
at the ninth parish the woman spies an open door and escapes into it
it is a tomb
densely pressed with the dead
and everywhere hung with strings of dates
and she crawls behind a lonely cadaver propped in a corner
after a few moments, emotionally contracted into
the dead bridegroom throws open the mausoleum door and demands, "are there any alive among the deceased in here"
the corpse she had slipped behind says, "no"
and she is saved
